The operation of a centrifugal pump

The principle of a centrifugal pump is based on the rotational motion of an impeller relative to a stationary pump housing. The impeller contains several vanes that are always curved backwards and is connected to the shaft driven by a motor. The liquid enters the pump axially at the centre of the impeller. As the impeller rotates, the fluid is entrained and acquires an outward velocity, due to centrifugal force. The outlet section of the centrifugal pump captures the liquid leaving the impeller. The shape of this section is such that the high velocity of the fluid is partially converted into static pressure through gradual expansion. Seals are fitted to the impeller and pump casing to prevent high-pressure fluid from flowing back into the inlet section of the pump or out of the pump casing.

The head of a centrifugal pump

This indicates the maximum bridgeable height difference between the water surface and the centre of the pump. The theoretical limit for the maximum suction height is 10.3 metres. In practice, however, this height is reduced by various losses. With an optimally operating and connected pump, the maximum achievable suction height will never exceed 8 metres.

Difference between a self-priming and normal-priming centrifugal pump

Self-priming centrifugal pump and normal-priming centrifugal pump are two different types of centrifugal pumps, which are deployed depending on specific needs in different applications.

Self-priming centrifugal pump

A self-priming centrifugal pump has the ability to suck up liquids. The prerequisite for this is that the pump must first be filled with water. The impeller is under water and swings this to the discharge section. This sucks the air out of the suction pipe by means of a vacuum. In a self-priming pump, the suction is located at the top of the pump housing. Self-priming pumps are often used for garden irrigation.

Normal suction centrifugal pump

The normal-priming centrifugal pump, or also called non-self-priming centrifugal pump, has the suction connection located in the centre of the pump housing. A normal-priming centrifugal pump requires the pump and suction line to be completely filled with liquid before it can start pumping. To fill the suction line and pump, this centrifugal pump is often fitted with a hand diaphragm pump.
