High-pressure pumps

The operation of a high-pressure pump

The high-pressure pump consists of drive and an aqueous part, where a number of plungers are driven mechanically. At the suction stroke, the inlet valve opens, the space in front of the plunger fills with water, at the discharge stroke the plunger pushes this volume of water via the discharge valve to the discharge side of the pump. Each plunger stroke always moves the same volume of water per plunger. The greater the drive speed, the more strokes per minute, the greater the water yield. In principle, a plunger pump can endlessly boost the water in pressure; the maximum allowable working pressure in high-pressure pumps is determined by the construction and choice of material.

Using the high-pressure pump

The duty cycle is the total time a pump is in operation consecutively. If the cleaning application requires the pump to be operational 24 hours a day, or a large part of it, choose an industrial high-pressure pump that is designed for this purpose and has proven its quality in practice. In general, it can be said that the service life of a high-pressure pump can be significantly improved by driving it at a 50% lower speed than the maximum drive speed specified by the manufacturer. This rule applies to all high-pressure plunger pumps, from small to large, from hobby pumps to process pumps.

Semi-professional use

These are high-pressure pumps with a high drive speed. These pumps have an expected life of up to about 1,500 running hours at a drive power of up to 7.5 kW. These can be both axial and radial high-pressure pumps.

Professional use

These are high-pressure pumps with a drive speed of 1500 rpm. These pumps have an expected service life of up to around 3,000 hours of operation. This is a radial high-pressure pump with a drive power of up to 18.5 kW.

Industrial use

These are high-pressure plunger pumps with a low crank speed and are designed for industrial or continuous use. The service life of these pumps is 10,000s of running hours. Here we should think of Hammelmann high-pressure pumps with a drive power of up to 750kW.

Difference between axial and radial piston pump

The plungers may be arranged in the direction of the drive shaft or perpendicular to it. When the plungers are in the longitudinal direction of the drive shaft we speak of an axial plunger pump. When the plungers are in the direction of the drive shaft, we speak of a radial plunger pump.

Axial plunger pump

Because the plungers hit the strike plate, they start moving back and forth. As the plunger moves to the right (due to the spring pressure), a negative pressure is going to be created because we are increasing the volume. This will push the lower ball up, filling the space with oil. If the plunger moves to the left (through the strike plate), then an overpressure is going to be created because we are making the volume smaller. This will push the ball to the left (open) and allow the oil to flow out.

Radial plunger pump

At the suction stroke, the water will be drawn in through the inlet valve - which is mounted in the pump head. On the discharge stroke, the inlet valve closes and the water is forced out through the outlet valve mounted in the pump head. A plunger pump has a relatively small water flow rate and is very suitable for high working pressures.

Choose the high-pressure pump that suits your application

Important when choosing a high-pressure pump is the right capacity. With too little capacity you will not have the desired cleaning result and with too much capacity you can damage the surface to be cleaned or you could have made a cheaper choice.
