From weed control to weed management

With effect from 31 March 2016, there is a ban on chemical pesticides by professionals on pavements. The aim of this measure is to improve water quality and protect human health. The ban currently only applies to pavements but the plan is to extend it to non-paved areas in the near future. We have found the best alternative to chemical weed control - controlling weeds with the patented Boiling Hot Water Technique.

Factors affecting weed growth

There are several factors that affect the degree of growth and presence of weeds. Some of the bills that matter:

• Environmental factors, these are factors such as light intensity. The presence of adjoining greenery and organic material fouling the joints between tiles.
• Use intensity on pavement, what is the location? The city centre, an industrial zone or the countryside. What is the function, is it a footpath, car park or cycle path.
• Quality of the design, what materials are used, how wide are the joints and what is the type of paving.

Different weed control techniques

There are several weed control techniques that can be used as alternatives to chemical weed control. Some of these techniques include:

• Sweeping
• Brushing
• Burning
• Electrocutting
• Fighting with hot water

The applicability of these techniques depends on several factors such as:

• Durability of the pavement
• Engineering agility
• Environmental conditions

Timing of fighting

With the alternative methods, timing of control is important. In the boiling hot water method, young weed tissue is the most heat-sensitive. Weed depletion is important here and this requires narrow control intervals. Research has shown that the Boiling Hot Water Technique is the most effective alternative method for weed control. This method requires only 4 treatments per year and gives the best results.

Operation of a hot water weed machine

By spraying the weeds exclusively with clean Boiling Hot Water at exactly 99°C, the plant's cell structure is destroyed and dies. This spraying is done with a low outlet pressure (1.5 bar). This makes Waterkracht's weeding machines suitable for all paved and semi-paved surfaces. An additional advantage is no splashing debris as a result of high-pressure water, which means you can work right up to the façade without damaging it.
